Incoming law students, and those of you looking to polish up your references for a future law school application, we've got an exciting opportunity for you.
Many of you may have seen or heard about an unusual posting on the New York Times's website by Katherine C. Wu. The person who posted the job wanted someone to write some letters of recommendation for him. It is this person's dream to be a member of the New York Times editorial board.
(The post actually states that this is the individual's first job out of law school. But, in a follow-up comment, the person reveals that he will be going to law school at an out-of-state school this fall.)
Needless to say, the job sounded like it was a good opportunity, and we got excited and started thinking about who would be the right person to do it. After a few moments, we realized, there were only two people in the world who could possibly write these letters: one is my husband (the other is Neil, but he couldn't write the letters on his own), and the other is one of my friends. I work with her on an afternoon schedule and she is my Facebook friend. It just so happened that she had the best letter to submit.
A few hours after posting the ad, we were shocked to find out that the individual had been interviewed. The job was already closed and the interview had been held (even though the ad said that the position was still open). We were told that the individual had not been hired, and we were really surprised when a couple days later the position was posted again.
As I've mentioned, this individual lives in LA, and doesn't know many people here. He has no family here, and even those who do are out of the country. A number of people who submitted letters of recommendation are his former teachers. We thought that this was pretty neat, because it would give a lot of us the opportunity to write letters that would benefit our friend.
